24 million set to lose cell phone access

As many as 24 million of Mexico’s 83 million cell phone users could get disconnected starting Wednesday for failing to register their phones by the April 10 deadline. The National Cell Phone Registry (Renaut) was enacted last year to counter extortionists using anonymous phone lines.  The unpopular measure has created a backlash. Telefónica, the 2nd largest cell phone operator, initially said it would refuse to comply on constitutional grounds, but later backtracked. (Reforma 4/11, Universal 4/12)
